As awareness grows across the sector about the environmental impacts of ICT, it is useful to take the opportunity of a gathering of projects to look at some of the issues surrounding this area and give some guidance as to how environmental issues can be addressed in JISC’s activities.

The session will be a mix of information presentation and discussion.

1. Professor Peter James (University of Bradford and leader of the JISC funded project ‘”Suste-IT“) will give a short presentation on the major issues facing HE and FE in respect of managing the environmental impacts of ICT use. This presntation will draw on the work that Professor James has been undertaking for JISC as well as his considerable experience in this field.

2. Howard Noble from the University of Oxford will describe the progress of the JISC funded Institutional Exemplar project “Low Carbon ICT” which is looking to reduce the carbon footprint of Oxford by developing systems across the university to wake computers when needed.

3. This will be followed by a time for discussion and debate about the issues raised and possible ways forward for JISC and its projects and programmes.
